China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences Hosts Branch Session of 2021 Shanghai Cooperation Organization Forum on Traditional Medicine

The branch session “Traditional Medicine and Human Health” of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Forum on Traditional Medicine was held in Nanchang, Jiangxi on July 30. The branch session was organized by China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (CACMS). Cui Li, Vice President of the Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation Commission of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (GNFCC SCO); Sun Jusheng, Vice Governor of Jiangxi Provincial Government; Song Li, Director of the Department of Maternal and Child Health of the National Health Commission; Wu Zhendou, Director of the Department of International Cooperation of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Huang Luqi, a fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of CACMS; Wu Yuhua, Executive Vice President of Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park Development Co., Ltd.; Fang Laiying, Vice President of the Chinese Hospital Association; Dou Fangfang, Deputy Director of Jiangxi Provincial Health Commission; Xie Guanghua, Director of Jiangxi Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Li Kun, Vice President of CACMS; Liu Qian, Vice President of Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine and other leaders attended the forum.

In the speech, Cui Li spoke highly of traditional medicine, especially the role of TCM in fighting the epidemic. Cui pointed out that this conference was an important measure to follow the General Secretary Xi Jinping’s proposal to “hold a great TCM forum”, and expressed that the GNFCC SCO will continue to support the use of TCM in the global fight against the epidemic and its promotion in the SCO member states.

In his speech, Sun Jusheng pointed out that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Forum on Traditional Medicine helps make Jiangxi the focus of attention for the world traditional medicine community, which will promote the deeper, high-quality development of Jiangxi TCM in theory and practice, and help the world better learn about China, Jiangxi, and TCM.

In his speech, Huang Luqi reviewed the previous cooperation between the CACMS and the SCO member states. He hoped that through this forum, traditional medicine communities from various countries brainstorm ideas, explore new measures, make new progress, and contribute wisdom and power to health for mankind.

Then, President Huang Luqi delivered a keynote report entitled “Foster Pragmatic Cooperation in Traditional Medicine and Build a Community of Common Health for Mankind”. He pointed out that as a type of traditional medicine that has safeguarded the Chinese nation for thousands of years, the TCM exhibited its vitality and contributed to the prevention and control of the COVID-19 epidemic at home and abroad this time. At the same time, it also introduced many cooperation programs between the CACMS and some countries along the Belt and Road, and pointed out that traditional medicine is an important vehicle for mutual learning under the Belt and Road Initiative. It is hoped that it will draw on experience in international cooperation and strengthen exchange and cooperation with SCO member states in personnel cultivation, scientific research, the development of medicinal plant resources, etc., and jointly build a community of common health for mankind.

In the speech, Wu Zhendou, Director of the Department of International Cooperation of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NATCM), reviewed the efforts made by the NATCM to promote the innovative development of TCM and the development of global traditional medicine, and introduced the cooperation with the SCO member states in the field of traditional medicine. It is hoped that participants learn from each other for the common development of traditional medicine.

Fang Laiying, Vice President of the Chinese Hospital Association; Song Li, Director of the Department of Maternal and Child Health of the National Health Commission; and Liu Liangji, President of the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine delivered reports entitled “Foster pragmatic cooperation and build a community for development”, “Work for TCM for women and children and outlook”, and “safeguard health for mankind based on the characteristics of TCM”. Moreover, Konstantin, an expert from the Health Protection Committee of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Hussein Reijed, Dean of the Traditional Medical School of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran; and Masarimov Yilan, Director of the Traditional Medicine Center of Astana Medical University in Kazakhstan delivered reports in the form of online videos, introducing the development of traditional medicine in their respective countries and the experience in applying traditional medicine to treat novel coronavirus pneumonia and common diseases.

This branch session was attended by nearly 100 people, including representatives of the GNFCC SCO, leaders and experts of the second-level units of the CACMS, leaders of the health and medical management departments of Jiangxi Province and other provinces and municipalities, experts and scholars from medical institutions, representatives of universities and the business community, as well as representatives of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies and the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies.

It is reported that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is the world’s largest regional organization for cooperation. In line with the guidelines of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s proposal for “holding the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Forum on Traditional Medicine at the appropriate time” at the 19th meeting of the SCO Heads of State Council, the 2021 Shanghai Cooperation Organization Forum on Traditional Medicine was held from July 28 to 30, 2021 in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province.
